We were able to keep this game close throughout the first half, but, ultimately our inability to move the ball effectively against their defense led to our demise. Credit Mason for stepping up their intensity level and finding some weaknesses in our offensive and defensive fronts. It seemed as though we were not able to maintain our physicality as a team and it may have cost us a shot at the conference championship. We must go back to work and hold each other accountable in order to give ourselves a chance at a share of the conference title.
Offensively, we could not execute our off-tackle game plan due to either the backside linebacker or penetration in our strong A-gap. They were able to expose a flaw in our blocking execution the we must address this week by explaining and taking better angles coming off of the ball. We also did not block our proper rules from the wing position at times which turned potential gains into ineffective plays. They were able to defend our passing attack as well.
Defensively, Mason was able to hook our nose shade with their center which left our Mike linebacker out to dry on the weak side dive which they broke for three long touchdowns. We must do a better job understanding the philosophy behind our run defense or risk exposure to big plays again this week. I was also disappointed once again with the lack of tacking and felt like we didn’t really swarm to the ball.
Offensive Player of the week - -
Cody played one series, but played with great effort and showed no fear in attacking the edge in pass protection.
Defensive Player of the week - - Cody played inspired football the entire game and led the team with 15 tackles and 24 positive points.

This was an important win for our season that sent all of the alumni who attended homecoming home happy. I felt that we came out inspired and jumped on them early with a turnover and a quick score and then we let them back into it with some big plays. However, we battled through some adversity created by a giving them a late score in the first half by coming out and shutting them down in the second half. We have put ourselves in a better position to finish off the season on a positive note with another ‘must’ win game this Friday against East Lansing.
Offensively, we adjusted nicely to some unexpected defensive fronts. Waverly got into a seven diamond defense that is specifically designed to shut down the wing-T offense and we still managed to create some nice inside trap and outside load holes. I thought one of the keys was executing our spread passing game in the third quarter that forced them to bring in some different personnel and got them out of the seven man front
Defensively, we played much harder and seemed to swarm to the ball with more purpose this week. We still need to be more consistent in reading and trusting our keys as some breakdowns led to three big plays on each of their scores. We did force two turnovers that led to touchdowns. We will continue to push for better focus and will need another inspired effort to knock off East Lansing and ruin their homecoming.
Offensive Player of the week - - Jake ran for 185 yards on 15 carries and caught 6 passes for a total of 70 yards. He also scored three TD’s
Defensive Player of the week - - Alex showed great improvement by netting 7 tackles including two for losses. He had a key stop on fourth down late in the game.

We came out a little flat in the beginning of the game and they caught us off guard with a quick score. On the positive side, we were able to bounce back and take control of the game near the end of the first half. I thought that Owosso played very inspired football and we had to counteract their aggressiveness. The victory enabled us to share the CAAC Red Conference championship for the first time with Mason getting knocked off by Sexton.
Offensively, we started very slow due to some rule errors on our running plays. We must do a better job reading moving lineman and understanding angles and paths. I felt that our passing game was efficient both out of regular and spread formations and once again was necessary to soften up their defense. We did a nice job in the second half of attacking their weak side with our game plan and were able to execute it for some long plays.
Defensively, we did not play up to our capabilities at times allowing them to sit in a base running formation and attacking us up front. We had too many breakdowns in our gap scheme in base and when we blitzed. Our pass defense was disappointing near the goal line as we allowed them to run inside routes that beat us for two scores. We must get better at making plays on the move up front in order to be sound this week and in the playoffs. We must also find ways to get pressure on the quarterback in passing situations.
Offensive Player of the week - -
Eddie had a big night running for 116 yards on just six carries and passing for 95 yards on 9 of 15 attempts.
Defensive Player of the week - - Colin had 3 solo tackles with 8 assists and 1 tackle for a loss while splitting time at MLB

Not the way that we wanted to finish the regular season against a very solid DeWitt team. We were amped up before that game and were able to take advantage of an early DeWitt turnover to score first and capture a little momentum. Unfortunately, we gave up a long run right after our score which turned the game in their favor. The sloppy field limited what we wanted to do offensively and we took far too many penalties on offense that stopped any potential drives.
Offensively, we did not block our game plan the way that it was designed which meant that we had a very feeble output of less than 100 yards of total offense. We need to review the philosophy behind our blocking schemes and understand that without taking proper angles and paths it is very difficult to have success against a good defense. I was not disappointed with our physical effort up front, but was very disappointed in our mental effort.
Defensively, we felt like we had a plan that would have worked if we would have executed our stunts better and tackled in the open field. They had trouble throwing the ball and if we would not have given up several big runs maybe we could have kept ourselves in the game. Again, it was disappointing that some defensive positions did not execute what we practiced all week. We knew that DeWitt had a very explosive offense and on this night they were able to expose some of our weaknesses.
Offensive Player of the week - -
Cody was the leading rusher with 28 yards on 6 carries and hit the short trap nicely.
Defensive Player of the week - - Cody had 11 tackles to lead the team in that category.
