Mason - Varsity Week 5

We were able to keep this game close throughout the first half, but, ultimately our inability to move the ball effectively against their defense led to our demise.  Credit Mason for stepping up their intensity level and finding some weaknesses in our offensive and defensive fronts.  It seemed as though we were not able to maintain our physicality as a team and it may have cost us a shot at the conference championship.  We must go back to work and hold each other accountable in order to give ourselves a chance at a share of the conference title.

Offensively, we could not execute our off-tackle game plan due to either the backside linebacker or penetration in our strong A-gap.  They were able to expose a flaw in our blocking execution the we must address this week by explaining and taking better angles coming off of the ball.  We also did not block our proper rules from the wing position at times which turned potential gains into ineffective plays.  They were able to defend our passing attack as well.

Defensively, Mason was able to hook our nose shade with their center which left our Mike linebacker out to dry on the weak side dive which they broke for three long touchdowns.  We must do a better job understanding the philosophy behind our run defense or risk exposure to big plays again this week.  I was also disappointed once again with the lack of tacking and felt like we didn’t really swarm to the ball.

Offensive Player of the week - Cody Gradwell - Cody played one series, but played with great effort and showed no fear in attacking the edge in pass protection.

Defensive Player of the week - Cody Garlock - Cody played inspired football the entire game and led the team with 15 tackles and 24 positive points.

Stick of the week - Tim Moinet
